For healthcare professionals

Hand rehabilitation, clinically tested.

Information for clinicians on how Hand in Motion works, the clinical evidence behind it, its safety profile, and how to offer it in your practice.

Evaluated in a peer-reviewed RCT · EU MDR Class I (TÜV Rheinland)
Hand in Motion robotic hand rehabilitation device by OSIND Medi Tech
How it works

Guided movement you can measure.

A custom vlinderorthese, a motor-guided active-assist device, and motion-controlled games — designed to deliver frequent, guided mobilisation and capture objective movement data. Patients use it across every phase of rehabilitation — from keeping the hand supple to building strength — in the clinic (for example within the CARAS approach) or at home with remote monitoring.

01

Guided mobilization

Haptic feedback and games guide the patient through frequent, repeatable movement of the elbow, arm, and wrist.

02

Objective data

Motion sensors capture range of motion and repetitions, so progress is measured — not estimated.

03

Monitored remotely

Sessions flow to the OSIND dashboard on web and the Blynk app, so you can review and adjust between visits.

Tested & safe

Clinically tested, and safe.

Hand in Motion is built on technology evaluated in a peer-reviewed randomized controlled trial, in which no adverse effects were reported. The device meets EU MDR Class I requirements, in line with TÜV Rheinland.

Co-creation

Built with healthcare professionals.

As part of CrossCare 2.0 (Interreg Flanders–Netherlands), Hand in Motion was evaluated through expert interviews with rehabilitation hospitals, a rehabilitation centre, physiotherapists and a healthcare insurer in the Netherlands and Flanders — supported by the care living labs LiCalab (Thomas More) and the Care Innovation Center. The system is also co-developed with Basalt Revalidatie (Basalt Fieldlab) at their Leiden, The Hague and Delft locations, with home use supported via Basalt Delft.

What professionals valued

Finger and wrist extension — important after stroke and with spasticity.
Full-finger movement — guides the whole finger, addressing limits of some existing gloves.
Active participation — encourages the patient to move actively, not purely passively.
Custom-fit & adjustable — individually fitted to each patient.
Hygienic & cleanable — cleanable materials, valuable in a clinical setting.
Remote & home use — a web dashboard follows progress; supports earlier and more frequent rehab.
Patient selection

Who it's for.

Indications

Suitable for

Post-operative hand stiffnessAfter hand fractures, flexor tendon, or neurovascular injuries — the population studied in the trial.
Upper-limb rehabilitationPatients working on elbow, arm, and wrist range of motion and control.
Patients who need frequent practiceWhere engaging, guided home exercise can support therapy between visits.
Considerations

Things to assess

Fit & comfortThe orthosis is fitted to the individual hand; assess comfort and skin condition.
Clinical judgementSuitability is determined by the treating professional as part of the overall therapy plan.

Contraindications

Hand in Motion is not suitable for every patient. The following situations are contraindications for use. Clinical judgement always applies — if you are in doubt about a specific patient, contact us before proceeding.

Open wounds or unhealed tissueThe vlinderorthese is worn directly on the hand. It must not be applied over open wounds, unremoved sutures, active infection, or skin breakdown — the fit and motor movement could cause harm.
Insufficient passive range of motionThe motor guides the hand through a range of motion. If a patient's joints cannot passively achieve the required range — due to severe contracture, rigid deformity, or acute injury — the device must not be used.
Medically unstable conditionHand in Motion is designed for rehabilitation, not acute care. Patients in the acute phase of stroke with uncontrolled vital signs, or with severe cardiovascular, neurological, or coagulation conditions that are currently unstable, should not use the device.
Inability to use the device safely at homeHand in Motion is intended for unsupervised home use between clinic visits. Patients who cannot follow instructions, operate a smartphone or tablet, or recognise and respond to discomfort during a session are not suitable for independent home use.

Frequently asked questions

Questions from clinics.

What therapists and clinic owners ask us most. Patient questions are answered on the home page.

How does the partner model work?
You buy the kit once and make the vlinderorthese for your patients on-site — earning a commission per successful patient — while OSIND provides and manages the devices. Or refer patients to our Herten location and still get free dashboard access for that patient. The full model is explained in the partner section above.
What's in the kit?
All vlinderorthese sizes and components needed to assemble a custom-fit orthese for any patient, plus assembly instructions. Contact us for the available kit models and pricing.
How do refills work?
When your kit components run low, contact us and we supply the refill parts. You keep making ortheses; we keep your kit stocked.
What do I see in the web dashboard?
Per patient: sessions completed, repetitions, training modes used, and movement data from the motion sensors — so you have a clear picture of what your patient has been doing between visits, and can adjust the therapy plan accordingly.
How do I set up the device for a new patient?
Scan the QR code on the motor unit in the Hand in Motion app and follow the steps — done in seconds, no technical knowledge needed. When a device comes back from a previous patient, the same scan sets it up for the next one.
Who pays what?
The clinic pays once for the kit. The patient pays the monthly device rental directly to OSIND, plus the one-time orthese fee — to you if you make it (you earn the commission), or to OSIND if we make it in Herten. The dashboard is included for partner clinics at no extra cost.
What if a device needs service or maintenance?
Contact us and OSIND handles it. You never need technical expertise — service, maintenance, and replacements are our responsibility.
How does the free trial work?
We offer a limited number of free trials for clinics in the Netherlands and Belgium, including onboarding and support. Ideally you have a patient who meets the inclusion criteria ready to try it. Request a trial via the form above and we'll be in touch personally.
